HOW IT ALL BEGAN

On 15 July 1979 a special meeting was called to order by the late Hj Ismail Rahmat among the residents of Clementi. Those who were present discussed and agreed to form a small committee to build a mosque in Clementi. 21 individuals sat in this special committee including Ust Pasuni Maulan.

FUNDRAISING EFFORT

They started to raise fund through various  programs such as Maulud Nabi, Awal Muharram , Israk Mikraj  & Ayam Goreng Amal and successfully raised $6,975.

MOSQUE BUILDING COMMITTEE

On 28 May 1980 another meeting was held and was attended by 13 bodies and representatives of Clementi & West Coast Neighborhood. In this meeting another committee was formed to explore a piece of land in Clementi, to build a mosque. 35 representatives were selected later approved by MUIS to sit in the Mosque Building Committee.

 

HOUSE OF PEACE

The name Darussalam which means House of Peace was approved by MUIS to be the name of the new mosque among several other names suggested by the committee. The name Darussalam was contributed by one of the member, Hj Noordin Suhood.

GARNERING SUPPORT

They later started to appoint representatives for several blocks in the area to act as Ambassadors. They were responsible to share the news of the building of a new mosque in the area. They also initiated a monthly fixed donation scheme where residents contributed monthly for the mosque building fund. This lasted from 1981 to 1985. They also organized several fundraising activities such as Walkathon, Nasi Briyani Amal, Ayam Goreng Amal, collection of old newspaper and clothes among many others.

WHERE IN CLEMENTI?

6 years after the first committee was formed, a plot of land was given by the government in building of Darussalam Mosque, located between Block 365 Clementi Ave 2 and Commonwealth Ave West A simple groundbreaking ceremony was held on 15th September 1985 officially launched by The Honourable Major Hj Abbas Abu Amin. Hj Mohd Hamdan was appointed as the mosque chairman from 1985 – 1988. In early 1986 a special committee consisting of professionals in the field of architecture, engineering, designing and auditing was formed to provide professional advice of the building.

LAUNCHING

Darussalam Mosque was officially opened on 27th December 1988 and the first Friday prayer was performed on the 30th December 1988 led by former Mufti Syed Isa Semait.
